Ideas For Your Wedding Video

Writer Amy Bloom is quoted as saying, “Marriage is not a ritual or an end. It is a long, intricate, intimate dance together and nothing matters more than your own sense of balance and your choice of partner.” Some might argue that wedding toasts also matter, and though the occasion is a serious and important one, that doesn’t mean it can’t be filled with funny wedding toasts.

Many commonplace words, prefixes and suffixes have Greek roots. Logue, meaning “to speak” as in the word monologue is a perfect example. And what is a wedding toast if not a mini-monologue?

These speeches have a history and it is also linked to ancient Greece. Before they were called toasts, they were called libations; Greeks raised their wine-filled chalices to the sky as an offering to the gods during ceremonial proceedings.

Modernized, wedding toasts still involve wine, or champagne, a lifting of glasses and sometimes prayers, but more than anything, they are wishes of health and good luck for the newlyweds and their families.

Sentiments and Speechmakers

Not to add unnecessary pressure, but a toast can leave a room in stitches or wondering who let the crickets in—it’s a lot of responsibility. Customarily, there are a few people tasked with the delivery of wedding toasts.

While the order of who toasts whom can vary depending what traditions or rules of etiquette one wishes to follow, it is generally accepted that the following people should prepare themselves to speak before the crowd; the best man, the maid of honor, father of the bride, and finally, the groom and bride.

These wedding toasts are an opportunity to not only wish happiness and congratulations to the bride and groom, but also offer the bride and groom a chance to thank the wedding party, their parents, and all the guests who are sharing in their special day.

What to say

The father of the bride will likely be the one to bring tears to the eyes of audience members as he waxes nostalgic on all the joy his little girl has brought him; his anecdotes could be quite humorous. When the maid of honor gets her chance, she might also say something witty. However, if anyone carries the saddle of becoming a stand-up comedian for a few minutes at a wedding, it’s the best man. He’s the one people are looking to for the funny wedding toast.

Most people are not going to be able to pull off an impromptu speech at any time, much less a well-received funny wedding toast. Unless the best man has the comedic chops to successfully accomplish such a feat, it is best to prepare prior to the wedding day.

Tension-relieving one-liners like “Marriage isn’t a word, it’s a sentence,” though potentially trite will still get a chuckle. From there, the best man’s funny wedding toast can include stories of his experiences with the groom, jabs at his bad behavior or shortcomings and even gentle pokes at the bride. The best man should keep in mind the people present when he is writing his funny wedding toast; the speech can be funny without being tasteless, embarrassing or offensive to the bride, groom, or their parents.

There will probably be video and these funny wedding toasts can be something the happy couple can revisit and laugh at for years to come.

Take the seriousness out of planning a wedding by watching a wedding movie. Always comical, wedding movies show the best and the absolute worst aspects of getting married. TLC counted down the top ten wedding movies of all time – because one wedding movie can’t accurately portray all the twists and turns of wedding bliss.

The number 10 wedding movie on TLC’s list is the 1991 remake of Father of the Bride, starring Steve Martin and Diane Kenton as the bride’s parents, and Martin Short as the wild and flamboyant wedding planner. No man is ever good enough for Daddy’s little girl, and Steve Martin portrays a neurotic father, in true Steve Martin form.

Coming in at number nine is My Best Friend’s Wedding. Julianne Potter (Julia Roberts) decides that she is still in love with her best friend Michael O’Neil (Dermot Mulroney) after he breaks their college-pact to marry each other if they are still single at 28. Michael announces his engagement to Kimberly Wallace (Cameron Diaz) which ignites Julianne’s buried feelings. Hoping to break up the happy couple, Julianne, roped into being Kimberly’s maid of honor, starts scheming. Moral of the story: don’t wait, another woman will grab a good man.

My Big, Fat Greek Wedding makes it to number eight on the best wedding movies list. Starring Nia Vardalos and John Corbert, this movie is full of food and stereotypes, charm and laughs. The Wedding Singer is number seven on the best wedding movie countdown. Robert Hart (Adam Sandler) is a wedding singer who meets Julia (Drew Barrymore). Engaged to other people, romance ensues as the attraction is unavoidable.

A life-long friendship doesn’t mean anything to BFFs Emma Allen (Anne Hathaway) and Liv Lerner (Kate Hudson) in the wedding movie Bride Wars, number 6 on TLC’s list. Double-booked on the same date at the same location, neither will change another date. War is declared, sabotage ensues. Does friendship prevail? Or do these bridezillas destroy New York?

The number five wedding movie is the original 1950s Father of the Bride, starring Spencer Tracy and Joan Bennett. This wedding movie sends a clear message that a wedding is the time to express your feelings to loved ones.

Debra Messing’s character hires gorgeous Dermot Mulroney, a professional escort for company at her sister’s wedding. In an effort to make her ex jealous, Messing’s character falls for Mulroney. The Wedding Date makes it to number four on the list.

Know how to spot uninvited guests by watching the #3 wedding movie, Wedding Crashers. Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson are professional womanizers who crash weddings looking to make a connection with the single ladies.

The romance of Westley and Buttercup is number two on TLC’s best list. Filled with romance, fencing and a lot of kissing, The Princess Bride is a 80s classic. With all the chases, giants and other monsters, this movie has something for the bride and groom.

Finally, the number one wedding movie on TLC’s list is the movie that has every bride dreading her soon-to-be hubby’s bachelor party, The Hangover. Sharing a hotel room with a lion and losing a couple of teeth are not the craziest things to happen to this group of men. This wedding movie makes any real-life wedding circumstances look like a bunny hop.
